London · two of us

We started in one small room, staring at a blank wall.

We're Mehdy and Mo. PlateLux exists because the art people love deserves better than a poster that curls at the corner - so we print it into metal instead.

How it started

It started as a gap in the market.

  1. The idea

    Mo brought it to Mehdy

Mo had been turning the same thought over for a while: metal prints, done properly, run from the UK. He put it to Mehdy, and instead of talking each other into it, the two of us went and checked whether it was worth doing at all.

  2. The research

We went and looked at the market

Weeks of it. Comparing what was already on sale, looking closely at the colour, reading what buyers complained about. Almost everything here turned out to be drop-shipped from overseas - long waits, colour that varied print to print, and nobody to ask when it went wrong.

  3. The gap

Nobody in the UK was doing it properly

The gaps were specific enough to build a business on: print here rather than ship from abroad, offer sizes that suit real walls, mount without putting a hole in anything, and be a person on the other end of an email. That was the plan, and it still is.

  4. The material

    Why metal

Sublimated into a coated aluminium surface, colour becomes part of the panel rather than a layer sitting on top of it. It doesn't fade, flake or yellow. It's 1.1mm thin, and it looks like it belongs in a gallery.

  5. The detail

Then we threw away the drill

The best print in the world is still a chore if hanging it means a wall plug and an argument. Ours hold on magnets. Up in a minute, moved in seconds, and not a hole to fill afterwards.

  6. Now

    Still the two of us

Every plate is printed when you order it, checked by one of us, and packed by hand. Reply to any email from PlateLux and it's Mehdy or Mo who reads it. That's the part we never want to outgrow.

Whole Apart

What you're actually buying

Take one apart.

Four layers, no mystery. Drag the handle to separate them and pick any line on the right to see the part it's talking about.

Blank wall

The point of all this

Drag it onto the wall.

This is the whole idea. A room is just a room until something on the wall makes it yours. Pull the handle across and try a few - it takes about as long as hanging one actually does.

Who you're actually buying from

There are two of us.

No warehouse, no call centre, no queue. Just the pair who started this in a small room in London and still run it that way - between us we process and pack every order that leaves here.

The technical side

I look after everything technical - the site you're reading this on, the way a file is set up so it prints the way it looks, the machinery that carries an order from a click to a box on your doorstep. When something here just works, that's the bit I'm responsible for.

Printing and the artwork

The printing is mine - the press, the profiles, the colour coming off the metal the way it looked on screen - and so is finding the art in the first place. Nothing goes in the catalogue that I wouldn't put on my own wall, and nothing leaves the press that isn't right - if the colour is off, it gets run again.
